Understanding Bereavement
We recognise that bereavement is an intensely personal journey, with each individual experiencing loss in their own way. Despite the unique nature of grief, there are certain practical tasks that must be addressed following the death of a loved one. These essential steps ensure that the necessary procedures are followed, allowing you to focus on your own needs and those of your family during this challenging time.
When A death occurs at home
If your loved one passes away at home and the death was expected, your first step is to contact the doctor or district nurse who has been caring for them. The healthcare professional will attend to verify the death in accordance with the necessary procedures. Once the death has been verified, you may reach out to us at any hour of the day or night. We will make arrangements to bring your loved one into our care, ensuring the process is managed with sensitivity and respect. Should you wish to spend some time with your loved one, or if you would prefer to wait until other family members arrive, please do not feel under any pressure. We will proceed to bring your loved one into our care only when you are ready, providing you with the time and space you need during this difficult moment
When A death occurs at A HOSPITAL
In the event that your loved one passes away in a hospital, you will be introduced to the Bereavement Team. The team will assist you by managing the necessary documentation and guiding you through the process. They will also ask you to confirm which funeral home you have chosen to care for your loved one. Once all required paperwork has been completed, the Bereavement Team will notify us when it is appropriate to bring your loved one into our care. As soon as your loved one is resting with us, we will contact you to offer reassurance and let you know that they are being looked after
if a death takes place in a care home
When a loved one passes away in a care home, they will arrange for a doctor or nurse to verify the death, ensuring all necessary procedures are followed. Once the death has been verified, the care home will reach out to us, and we will ensure you are kept updated throughout the process. As soon as your loved one is resting with us, we will let you know, providing reassurance and guidance at every step.
When the coroner is involved
The coroner becomes involved in cases where the death is sudden, unexpected, results from an accident or when the cause is unknown. Although the coroner’s role is not uncommon, their involvement changes the process for registering the death. If the death is reported to the coroner, they will arrange for the deceased to be collected by a designated company. Once the coroner has concluded their findings, you may provide them with our contact details. We will then arrange to bring your loved one into our care, allowing funeral arrangements to proceed.
How To Register A Death
You will need to book an appointment with the Registrar’s office to register the death. Once the Medical Cause of Death Certificate (MCCD) has been issued by the doctor, and been checked and signed by the Medical Examiner, it will be digitally forwarded directly to the Registrar. The Medical Examiner will inform you when you can make your registration appointment, and once informed, you should register within 5 days.
The person registering the death needs to call 0344 800 8020 or book via the online booking system:

Obtaining Additional Certified Copies of the Death Certificate
During your appointment with the Registrar, you will have the opportunity to purchase extra certified copies of the death certificate. This step is recommended, as these copies are often required for managing practical matters such as closing bank accounts, settling life insurance policies, and handling other administrative tasks related to the estate. Having multiple certified copies can help ensure that you are able to efficiently address the necessary arrangements following the death, avoiding delays when dealing with institutions and organisations that may require official documentation. The Registrar will ask questions about the deceased, including:

• Full name, including any previous surnames
• Full address
• Date and place of birth
• Occupation (or previous if retired)
• Appointed Funeral Director

At the appointment, the Registrar will digitally issue a Certificate for Burial or Cremation (known as ‘The Green Form’) directly to the appointed Funeral Director.
